qZERO Sustainability Score

What is a business Sustainability Rating for brands?

The qZERO® Sustainability Rating shows you which brands are truly sustainable and why - using independent and third-party verified data. This data is not influenced by any relationships we, as questionZERO, may have with the brands (meaning brands cannot pay us to boost their score).

1-star ratings show that a company has minimal engagement in sustainable practices and has a lot to improve. At the other end of the scale, 5-star ratings are awarded to businesses demonstrating leadership and excellence in sustainability - a glowing example for others within their industry.

Where does the data come from?

  • Business ESG reports. Every large business (and SMEs in Europe with plans to be followed by other regions), must submit their sustainability performance report as part of their overall company reporting.
  • Core business sustainability data. We use the EU taxonomy for sustainable activities framework as a guideline to identify and analyse “environmentally sustainable” economic activities.
  • Third-party verification. We rely on official business financial and non-financial reports, not just marketing information. We also engage directly with businesses to fill any gaps and keep our data up-to-date by constantly monitoring the latest retail news. Our proprietary sustainability ratings broadly align with ESG profiles from variouse reputable sources like Sustainalytics , MSCI . The main difference is that our ratings, designed for consumers, are not only accurate but also practical for everyday shopping decisions.
  • Financial data analysis. Yes, we are finance professionals too! We use our financial expertise, gained with the help of the University of Exeter Business School, the top UK and ninth overall business school focused on sustainability (Corporate Knights 2023 Better World ranking) - to analyse all the financial data. We employ our own IP and methodology to make this data easy for you to understand.
  • AI data processing. We have a lot of data that we fit into 5-star ratings. To simplify complexity, we utilise intelligent AI data analysis at scale.

Comparing Industries

The qZERO Sustainability Rating also looks at how a business ranks in its own industry.

For example, it wouldn't make sense to compare a shoe company's CO2 emissions to those of a car manufacturer. But, we can show you if a brand is leading the way in being green and beating out the competition, or if it's just doing the bare minimum or less.

ESG Reports

Our Sustainability Rating is also based on objective and verifiable information from companies' ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reports.

What are ESG reports and why do they matter?

Let’s break it down into the three parts: Environmental, Social and Governance.

  • Environmental: evaluates how friendly a company is to the planet, focusing on its carbon footprint, waste management, and resource utilisation. Companies with strong environmental practices mitigate climate change risks and position themselves as leaders in transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
  • Social: examines how a company treats people, including employees and communities. It looks at working conditions, inclusivity, and fairness. Good social practices lead to higher employee satisfaction, better customer loyalty, and improved community relations, contributing to long-term sustainable growth.
  • Governance: focuses on company leadership, audits, internal controls, and shareholder rights. Strong governance ensures accountability, transparency, and ethical behaviour, reducing risks and enhancing reputation. Well-governed companies are managed responsibly and are less likely to encounter trouble.

ESG is vital for understanding a business's sustainability. It is measurable, legally required to be reported truthfully, and helps mitigate greenwashing. ESG reports reflect a company's ability to manage risks and capitalise on sustainability opportunities. ESG is essential for long-term success and resilience in a complex world.

Industry Sustainability Score comparison

Industry GraphqZERO Sustainability Score also looks at how a business ranks in its own industry. It's important to compare similar things, and we make sure to compare brands that are alike.

For example, it wouldn't make sense to compare a shoe company's CO2 emissions to those of a car manufacturer. But, we can show you if a brand is leading the way in being green and beating out the competition, or if it's just doing the bare minimum or less.

So, when you're checking out brands, focus on two key things: the brand's own qZERO Sustainability Score and how it stacks up against others in its industry. There's a lot of data behind this, but don't worry - that's what we're here for, to simplify it for you.

qZERO Sustainability Score Vs Trustpilot Ratings?

fact checkedUnlike Trustpilot's TrustScore, which focuses on customer satisfaction through star ratings, the qZERO Sustainability Score evaluates a product's impact on our planet. This evaluation is based on business reports data and other verifiable sustainability information relevant to brands.

Think of it like this: Trustpilot awards stars to products based on how much people enjoy them. The qZERO Sustainability Score, however, differs significantly. It rates products on a scale from 1 to 5, not based on popularity, but on their Net Zero transition progress, environmental friendliness, and a broader sustainability impact on our planet. The qZERO Sustainability Score is grounded in hard facts, not personal opinions, and tells you how planet-friendly a product is. This score guides you in choosing products that are better for the planet, moving beyond mere customer satisfaction to empower you to make informed decisions when buying products and services.

qZERO Sustainability Score and Which? Ratings: What's the Difference?

choiceWhile Which? guides you through product pricing, quality and reliability, qZERO looks at the broader definition of sustainability which also values the quality and durability of products.

The qZERO Sustainability Score adopts a holistic approach, focusing on a brand's overall sustainability aspects and its broader environmental impact. This isn't just about being eco-friendly; it's about understanding a company's entire sustainability journey.

The qZERO Sustainability Score arms you with all the details, letting you choose wisely without pushing any products onto you. We believe in empowering you to make choices that are good for you and the earth. Your decision matters, and we're here to help you make it with confidence.

Why ESG Matters: The Wider Impact

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance)  data is crucial for understanding and measuring businesses' position on sustainability.

ESG

The "Environmental" part checks how friendly a company is to the planet. This aspect evaluates how a business manages its relationship with the environment, including its carbon footprint, waste management, and resource utilisation. Companies with strong environmental practices are not only mitigating risks associated with climate change and resource scarcity but are also positioning themselves as leaders in the transition to a low-carbon economy, and preparing for a future where being eco-friendly is a must.

The "Social" component is about how the company treats people—from its employees to the communities it operates in. It examines how a company manages relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and communities. Do they offer good working conditions? Are they inclusive, respectful, and fair? This covers labour practices, product responsibility, and human rights. Businesses that excel in social practices are likely to have higher employee satisfaction, better customer loyalty, and improved community relations, contributing to their long-term sustainable growth.

"Governance" focuses on how the company is run. It focuses on a company’s leadership, audits, internal controls, and shareholder rights. Strong governance practices ensure accountability, transparency, and ethical behaviour, reducing risks and enhancing a company's reputation. Good governance means a company is less likely to run into trouble because it's managed responsibly.

Easy Sustainable ShoppingOverall, ESG matters because it is vital for understanding the sustainability of a business. Not only is it measurable in hard numbers, but companies also have a legal responsibility to report it truthfully and transparently. ESG reports are fact-based, help mitigate greenwashing, and reflect a company's ability to manage future risks, capitalise on opportunities related to sustainability, and align with the growing demand from stakeholders for responsible business practices. As such, ESG is not just a moral imperative but a strategic one, essential for long-term success and resilience in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

For consumers, supporting companies that score well on sustainability based on their ESG performance can be a way to make the world a bit better with where you spend your money. You can easily check questionZERO business sustainability ratings for brands every time you shop.
